What is The Social Space to you? On the outside, The Social Space may seem like a cafe that practices and promotes sustainability which houses staff members with lower and higher functioning abilities and of different ages. To me, The Social Space is a home that accommodates a concoction of lovely and resilient believers.
I had the opportunity to intern at TSS through the DBS Business for Impact Program in 2022. My role was a Marketing Intern, in the Retail Department, and my job scope included stock-taking, fulfilling online orders and curating a slide deck for corporate orders… I shall stop here before I bore you with my day-to-day tasks whatsoever, you can watch the video (below) which summarises my 10-week internship at TSS.
One of my biggest takeaways, on top of the skill sets learnt, was realising the impact of inclusive employment. Although I was in the Retail Department I had many opportunities to interact with staff from the cafe and the nail salon. Through my interactions with them, it made me realise how ‘normal’ they are despite some of them being labelled as ‘lower functioning’. Just like any of us, they have their own dreams, strengths and weaknesses. I also observed their never-giving-up attitude as these individuals continued to turn up for work and gave in their best despite the various challenges faced. If TSS had not practised inclusive employment, these individuals may not have had the opportunities to chase after their dreams. ✨✨✨
Working with Farhana, my supervisor, made work a whole lot of fun and enriching. As shown in the video, we vibe well. 🤩🤩🤩 I think we were a great duo! We would work hand-in-hand to complete tasks and help each other along the way. There is nothing more I can ask for! I would rate Farhana 9.9/10. (-0.1 because she has to be reminded to eat and drink regularly!)

I would also like to give a special shoutout to Cheryl and Daniel, co-founders of TSS.
Cheryl, who would check on my well-being from time to time, and Daniel, despite a fierce demeanour, is actually a funny guy. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work at TSS and inviting me to the Staff Christmas Party even though my contract ended about 5 months ago. Last but not least, thank you for the staff meals I had throughout the 10 weeks (aka smoothie bowls, toasts and lattes). 💖💖💖
